In the foreground, Queen Cleopatra is depicted seated on a throne adorned with tiger fur. On her head, she wears a vulture-shaped crown, a symbol of queenship dating back to the IV dynasty. To the right of the queen, a scantily clad courtesan waves a fly whisk to ward off flies, while at their feet, a majestic leopard rests (an animal Cleopatra enjoyed the company of).

To her left, in stark contrast to the lascivious pose of the queen, are two condemned individuals: one still alive (writhing in pain from administered poisons) and one already deceased. Above the slave clutching his stomach, face contorted in pain, stands a woman holding a vial containing poison. Next to them, two men carry away the corpse of the other condemned. The cruelty of the scene contrasts with the splendor of the palace where these atrocities are committed: bathed in light, amidst vibrant hieroglyphs, the condemned are killed solely to test the improvement of the queen's poisons.

Proudly, Cleopatra observes the scene from afar: with a cold gaze, she appears indifferent to the suffering of the dying slave.
