The Fairy Feller’s Master-Stroke is one of the most extraordinary and mysterious paintings of the Victorian era, created by Richard Dadd during his time in the Bethlem Royal Hospital. Dadd worked on the piece for nine years, carefully building up layer after layer of tiny, intricate details.
The scene depicts a magical gathering of fairies, elves, and mythical creatures, frozen in the moment before the “fairy feller” strikes his final blow to split a hazelnut. Every figure seems alive with movement and personality – some watching closely, others whispering or hiding in the lush, dreamlike forest. The painting is full of symbolism and hidden meaning, revealing Dadd’s extraordinary imagination and technical mastery.
The result is a mesmerizing vision – at once enchanting and unsettling – that invites viewers to lose themselves in a fantasy world unlike any other. Today, the original is housed in the Tate Britain, where it remains one of the most beloved examples of Victorian fantasy art.
