This work confirms the belief of the poet Charles Baudelaire, who stated, "Parisian life is rich in poetic and marvelous subjects: we are surrounded by them, immersed in them, as in a wonderful atmosphere, but we don't realize it." This painting, in particular, stands out for its bold compositional structure, divided into two autonomous horizontal zones. The first captures the orchestra pit, with various musicians engrossed in playing, while the second depicts the ballerinas in the moment of bowing to the ballet's étoile. With the immediacy of a photographic snapshot, Degas skillfully juxtaposes the heads of the musicians, which, due to the distance, appear colossal compared to the minute and fragile bodies of the dancers in the background.

Equally audacious is the painting's chromatic arrangement, where the deep and decisive blacks of the musicians' attire, adorned with elegant white collars, undergo a vivid and lively color contrast with the iridescence of the stage. The stage itself is rich with pristine and lightweight costumes, as well as vibrant scenography, projecting its own light against the dark auditorium.
